Researchers have different ways of thinking about addictions. This influences the models they use. There are four main Behavioral Models that can be used to describe addiction: the Moral Model of addiction, Disease Model of addiction, SocioCultural Model of addictive, and Psycho-dynamic Model. According to the Moral Model of addiction, addiction is an act of moral weakness. It is also believed that the individual responsible for their addiction is responsible. Moral Model supporters view drug addiction as a choice. According to the Disease Model, substance abuse can be described as a chronic, relapsing condition that causes brain damage. Research on the neurobiological components of addiction has yielded mixed results. Abstinence is the only viable treatment. Socio-Cultural modeling attempts to explain why certain populations are more vulnerable to substance abuse than others. It looks at how the marginalized can become more susceptible to addiction due to discrimination, poor life quality, low opportunity and other problems. Psycho-Dynamic modeling considers trauma and mental illness as precursors to addiction. Many rehabilitation centers deal with "co-occurring", or substance abuse disorder and mental illness.

Different rehab programs have different costs. They can range from low-cost programs, which are either community- or government-funded, to high-end facilities. Many drug rehabilitation centers are affordable for clients. Additionally, many communities offer free counseling and/or rehab drug treatment. These programs typically take place in outpatient drug rehabilitation centers.

People with a difficult dual diagnosis, such as addiction or bipolar disorder, may find long-term rehab programs useful. Some people choose to stay in a long-term treatment program for the extra benefits that it offers.

Intensive outpatient treatment - The intensive outpatient (IOP), is a lower level of care than the residential treatment program. Participants in the IOP will be able to attend sessions and programs during the day, and then return home at night.

Substance abuse is not a one-size fits all situation, and we don't believe it should be. We instead offer a compassionate and person-centered approach to substance abuse and care that is tailored to your individual needs and circumstances, regardless of where you are at the recovery stage.

In drug rehabilitation, the definition of "recovery" is still subjective. There are no established standards for measuring it. Betty Ford Institute defined the definition of recovery as "complete abstinence", while other studies used "near-abstinence" to describe it. This wide variety of meanings makes it difficult to select rehabilitation programs.

Methadone and buprenorphine, along with more buprenorphine, are used widely to treat addictions and dependence on opioids like heroin, morphine and oxycodone. Methadone maintenance therapy and buprenorphine help reduce cravings and opiate use. Both drugs can be used to treat addiction (for an indefinite time) or as maintenance medication. All available studies collected in the 2005 Australian National Evaluation of Pharmacotherapies for Opioid Dependence suggest that maintenance treatment is preferable, with very high rates (79-100%) of relapse within three months of detoxification from levo-a-acetylmethadol (LAAM), buprenorphine, and methadone.

Multiple addiction treatments have been proven to be successful and are often combined.
